The Imperial Aramaic alphabet is an ancient script that was widely used during the first millennium BCE across the Middle East. It developed from the Phoenician alphabet and became the official writing system of the Aramaic language during the Achaemenid Persian Empire. This made it one of the earliest scripts to be used for administrative and cultural communication across a vast region. The alphabet consisted of 22 consonantal letters written from right to left.
Over time, the Imperial Aramaic script influenced many later writing systems, including Hebrew, Nabataean, and Arabic alphabets. It played a key role in connecting different cultures and languages during ancient times. Today, scholars study the Imperial Aramaic alphabet to understand the roots of Semitic languages and the evolution of written communication in the Near East.
