The Mandaic Alphabet is the writing system used by the Mandaean people, a small religious community with ancient roots in southern Iraq and southwestern Iran. It dates back nearly two thousand years and is used to write the Mandaic language, which belongs to the Aramaic family. The alphabet holds great spiritual importance because it is used in the sacred books and prayers of the Mandaeans, who follow a faith centered around light, purity, and knowledge.
The script is written from right to left and includes 24 main letters, all of which are rounded and graceful in form. The last letter, “Ad,” also serves as a symbol of the divine in Mandaean tradition. The Mandaic Alphabet continues to be used in religious texts and cultural studies, keeping alive one of the world’s most ancient writing traditions and preserving the identity of the Mandaean people.
