The Meetei Mayek Alphabet is the writing system used for the Meitei or Manipuri language, spoken mainly in the Indian state of Manipur. It is one of the oldest scripts from Northeast India, with origins tracing back to ancient times. The script was replaced by the Bengali alphabet during the 18th century but was later revived in the 20th century as part of a cultural movement to preserve Manipuri identity and heritage. Today, it is officially used in schools, books, and government documents in Manipur.
The Meetei Mayek script is written from left to right and contains 27 main letters that represent unique sounds of the Manipuri language. Each letter has its own beautiful and distinct form, often inspired by natural shapes and patterns. The revival of this alphabet has played an important role in promoting the language and culture, making it a proud symbol of the Manipuri people’s history and traditions.
