The Meroitic Alphabet was used in the ancient Kingdom of Meroë, located in what is now Sudan. It developed around the 3rd century BCE and is one of the earliest known alphabets used in Africa. The script was created to write the Meroitic language, which descended from the earlier Egyptian writing systems but became a unique form of its own. It includes both hieroglyphic and cursive versions, depending on whether it was carved on monuments or written on papyrus.
The Meroitic script has 23 main letters, representing both consonants and vowels, and is written from right to left. Although scholars have partially deciphered it, the full meaning of the Meroitic language remains a mystery. The alphabet stands as a remarkable example of early African writing and reflects the cultural and political strength of the Meroitic civilization, which flourished for many centuries along the Nile Valley.
