Javanese Alphabet

The Javanese alphabet is a traditional script used to write the Javanese language, mainly spoken on the island of Java in Indonesia. Known locally as “Aksara Jawa” or “Hanacaraka,” it is a beautiful and artistic writing system that reflects the deep cultural and literary heritage of Java. The script was once widely used for literature, inscriptions, and correspondence before the Latin alphabet became more common.

The Javanese script is descended from the ancient Brahmi family of scripts through Kawi. It contains 20 basic consonant letters and a set of vowel marks, diacritics, and special signs. Each character has a rounded, flowing design that gives the script a decorative appearance. The writing runs from left to right and often uses additional marks to show sounds and pronunciation details.

Although modern Javanese people mostly use the Latin alphabet today, the Javanese script is still taught in schools and used in cultural works, traditional ceremonies, and signage. It stands as a symbol of Javanese identity and artistic expression, preserving the beauty of one of Southeast Asia’s oldest writing traditions.
