The Kaithi alphabet is an old script that was once widely used in northern and eastern India, especially in regions like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. It was used to write several languages, including Bhojpuri, Magahi, and Hindi. The script takes its name from the “Kayastha” community, who were traditionally scribes and record keepers.
Kaithi evolved from the ancient Brahmi script and was popular for writing administrative records, letters, and legal documents. It was simpler than Devanagari, making it easier and faster for everyday writing. The script includes a set of vowels, consonants, and symbols that reflect the sounds of Indo-Aryan languages. It was typically written from left to right without complex ligatures.
Although Kaithi gradually disappeared in the early 20th century, replaced by Devanagari, it remains an important part of India’s writing history. In recent years, interest in preserving and studying the Kaithi script has grown, as it represents a valuable link to the cultural and administrative practices of early northern India.
