The Samaritan Alphabet is an ancient script used by the Samaritan community to write the Samaritan Hebrew language. It is one of the oldest alphabets still in use today, with origins tracing back over 2,500 years. The script developed from the Paleo-Hebrew alphabet, which itself was derived from the Phoenician writing system. It is mainly used in religious texts, prayers, and inscriptions by the small Samaritan community in Israel and the West Bank.
The Samaritan alphabet consists of 22 letters and is written from right to left, similar to Hebrew and Aramaic. The letters have a distinct, square-like appearance and are used primarily for sacred purposes, including copies of the Samaritan Torah. Although the script is no longer used for everyday writing, it remains an important part of the Samaritans’ cultural and religious identity.
The continued use of the Samaritan alphabet reflects the community’s dedication to preserving their ancient traditions. It stands as a link to the early history of Semitic writing and remains a symbol of faith, history, and cultural continuity.
