Hmong Alphabet

The Hmong Alphabet is used to write the Hmong language, spoken by the Hmong people across China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and communities around the world. The most widely used form today is the Romanized Popular Alphabet (RPA), which was developed in the 1950s by missionaries and linguists. It is based on the Latin script and includes 33 letters that represent tones and sounds specific to the Hmong language. This system helped preserve the language in written form and made it easier to teach and share globally.

Before the RPA, several other Hmong scripts existed, including the Pahawh Hmong alphabet, an original writing system created by Shong Lue Yang in the 20th century. The Pahawh Hmong script is unique and symbolic, showing the creativity and cultural depth of the Hmong people. However, the Latin-based Hmong alphabet is now the most common and practical form for education, media, and communication.

The Hmong alphabet plays an essential role in preserving the community’s language and identity. It connects generations of speakers and ensures that the Hmong culture and traditions continue to be shared through both spoken and written words.
