The Oriya Alphabet, also known as the Odia script, is used to write the Odia language, which is spoken mainly in the Indian state of Odisha. It is one of the official languages of India and has a long literary history dating back over a thousand years. The script evolved from the ancient Brahmi script through the Kalinga and Siddham styles, gradually forming its rounded and graceful shapes that are easily recognizable today.

The Odia alphabet includes 11 vowels and 38 consonants, and it is written from left to right. The letters are known for their curved appearance, which developed because early writing was done on palm leaves, where straight lines could damage the surface. The script is phonetic, meaning that each symbol represents a clear and consistent sound, making reading and pronunciation straightforward for learners.

Today, the Oriya script is used in education, literature, media, and daily communication throughout Odisha and among Odia-speaking communities around the world. It stands as a symbol of the region’s rich cultural heritage and continues to preserve one of India’s oldest and most beautiful literary traditions.
