Khmer Alphabet

The Khmer Alphabet is the official writing system of Cambodia and is used to write the Khmer language, the country’s national language. It is one of the oldest scripts in Southeast Asia, developed around the 7th century from the Pallava script of southern India. The Khmer script has 33 consonant letters, 23 vowels, and 12 independent vowels, making it one of the most detailed alphabets in the world. Its elegant, rounded style reflects the artistic traditions of ancient Khmer culture, seen in inscriptions found on temple walls like Angkor Wat.

The Khmer script is written from left to right and does not use capital or small letters. It is an abugida, meaning each consonant carries an inherent vowel sound that can be changed with vowel signs. The alphabet continues to play a central role in Cambodian identity, education, and literature. Even in the digital age, the Khmer Alphabet stands as a symbol of national pride and the deep cultural heritage of the Cambodian people.
