The Manichaean Alphabet was used to write the sacred texts of Manichaeism, a major religion founded by the prophet Mani in the 3rd century CE in Persia. It was based on the Syriac script but developed its own unique shapes and style to suit the needs of the religion’s followers. The script was used to write several languages, including Middle Persian, Parthian, and Sogdian, spreading widely across Central Asia, the Middle East, and even parts of China as Manichaeism expanded.
The Manichaean script is written from right to left and consists of around 30 main letters that represent consonants and vowels. Its letters are elegant and carefully shaped, reflecting the artistic and spiritual nature of the religion. Although Manichaeism eventually disappeared, the Manichaean Alphabet remains an important part of historical studies, offering insight into ancient writing traditions and the cultural connections between East and West.
