Runic Alphabet

The Runic Alphabet, also known as the Futhark, is one of the oldest writing systems used by Germanic peoples of Northern Europe, including the Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, and early Scandinavians. It first appeared around the 2nd century AD and was used for writing various Germanic languages. The name “Futhark” comes from the first six runes: F, U, Þ (Th), A, R, and K. The earliest form, known as the Elder Futhark, contained 24 letters, while later versions like the Younger Futhark and Anglo-Saxon Futhorc had different numbers of symbols.

Each rune in the alphabet represents both a sound and a symbolic meaning, often connected to nature, gods, or daily life. The letters were usually carved into wood, stone, or metal, giving them a sharp and angular appearance. Runic writing was not only used for everyday communication but also for magical and religious purposes, as many believed runes held spiritual power.
