The Old Persian Alphabet, also known as Old Persian Cuneiform, was used in the ancient Persian Empire during the Achaemenid period (around 600–300 BCE). It was primarily used to write inscriptions in the Old Persian language, often carved on stone monuments and royal tablets.
This writing system was inspired by earlier Mesopotamian cuneiform scripts but simplified to fit the Persian language. The Old Persian script includes around 36 phonetic signs that represent syllables, along with a few symbols for word dividers and numbers. It was mainly used for royal inscriptions by kings such as Darius the Great and Xerxes I.
Though it later gave way to other Persian scripts, the Old Persian Alphabet remains a significant part of linguistic history, offering valuable insights into the culture, politics, and achievements of ancient Persia.
